Integrating Technology in Sexual Health Education: Educator Perspectives and Best Practices

The integration of technology into sexual health education is increasingly prevalent, yet the experiences of health educators implementing these technologies remain underexplored. This article delves into a study assessing the perceptions and experiences of health educators using technology within the 'In the Know' (ITK) program, aiming to identify both the facilitators and challenges encountered. By understanding these dynamics, future programs can be better designed to effectively engage youth and improve sexual health outcomes.

Over the past decade, technology has become a significant component of sexual health education. The proliferation of smartphones and internet access among adolescents has created opportunities to deliver educational content through mobile apps, videos, and online resources. Technology can potentially overcome barriers such as embarrassment and limited access to inclusive education, particularly for marginalized youth. However, the digital divide persists, highlighting the importance of addressing technological needs and limitations among participants.

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate health educators' perceptions and experiences regarding the integration of technology into the ITK program, a sexual health education curriculum designed for underserved youth in Fresno County, California. The study utilized data from implementation logs and annual interviews with health educators to assess their experiences with the technology, adaptations made during implementation, and overall impact on youth engagement. The ITK program combines in-person sessions with technology-based content accessible through a mobile app and website.

The study revealed several key successes and challenges across three main domains: managing technology, ITK app usability, and youth engagement. While health educators generally had positive comments about the app and youth engagement with technology-based content, they also noted barriers such as limited data storage and battery life on mobile phones. Technological issues affected implementation to varying degrees, with improvements observed over time as educators became more familiar with the app and its functionality improved. Non-school settings experienced more technology-related challenges compared to school environments.

Effective management of technology was crucial for successful implementation. This included ensuring device compatibility, reliable internet access, and the availability of necessary hardware such as projectors and speakers. Health educators found that implementation was smoother in sites equipped with audiovisual devices. However, significant preparation time was required to pack tablets, Wi-Fi hotspots, and ensure all devices were charged and functional. Internet connectivity issues and tablet malfunctions sometimes led to delays or the omission of instruction, necessitating alternative teaching methods.

The usability of the ITK app played a significant role in its effectiveness. Health educators reported positive responses to the online content and resources, with the app serving as a valuable reference for local services. However, challenges arose due to compatibility issues with certain smartphone operating systems, frequent crashes of specific functionalities, and broken links within the app. Barriers to downloading the app included a lack of data, shared phones, and limited battery life. Some youth were also reluctant to download the app or forgot their login credentials, hindering access to the resources.

The integration of technology had a mixed impact on youth engagement. While the use of tablets increased engagement for some, others were distracted by playing on electronic devices. Certain digital content resonated well with youth, enhancing their learning experience. However, it was essential for health educators to manage distractions and ensure that technology was used as a tool for learning rather than a source of disruption. Balancing the benefits of technology with the need for focused attention was a key challenge.

The findings of this study have important implications for the design and implementation of future technology-based sexual health education programs. It is crucial to provide health educators with adequate training and support to optimize technology as a resource for engaging with youth and delivering sensitive information. Programs should consider the technological needs and limitations of participants, educators, and settings. Addressing issues such as internet connectivity, device compatibility, and app usability can enhance the effectiveness of technology-based interventions and improve youth outcomes.

However, successful implementation requires careful planning, adequate resources, and ongoing support for health educators.
